"Well, if Jane does die,
it will be a comfort to know she was
in pursuit of Mr. Bingley."
jane's father | pride and prejudice
(Siiiiiiince it is Valentines Day... there has to be a romantic post. C'mon now...)
This isn't a post about my favorite movie.
Or my favorite work of literature.
Or my favorite version of a particular story.
This is about my (current but also longstanding) favorite "guy" character in a story.
Ever since I saw the original Pride & Prejudice in middle school, followed by the "new" Pride & Prejudice in high school, followed by studying the real book later in high school, I've always been a LARGE Bingley fan.
I just love that he has no ego.
No macho-ness to break down.
Just genuine, light-hearted, possibly naive, but nonetheless sweet affection.
He's maybe not the most interesting of all characters in this world, but he's so so nice.
I'm a little rough around the edges and a touch sarcastic, so I think I always appreciated this kind, honest character.
Team Bingley, yo.
A special "Bingley treat" will be in the gift basket,
so enter to win by letting me know YOUR favorite "guy" (or "girl", I suppose) character in a story!
For new-comers:

i love flynn rider from tangled! yes i know. haha :D
ReplyDeletethat would be Gilbert Blythe. Ohmyword. His patience, gentleness, strength, and -- can't forget -- hunky good looks. :-P
ReplyDeleteRick Blaine in Casablanca. For loving Ilsa so deeply that he put what he believed was best for her over his own selfish desires to be with her. He just makes me melt...man I adore that movie.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite guy ever would be Mr. Thornton from North and South. I have just one word about him: Swoon.
ReplyDeleteYup. That would be my fave!
Bronte
This makes me laugh, but I think my favorite guy is "Van" from the tv show Reba. He is absolutely hilarious, goofy, crazy, and such kid, but loves and adores his wife "Cheyanne" like crazy. Kinda reminds me of my husband :)
ReplyDeleteHaha, I like your favorite character, especially "why" you like him.
ReplyDeleteOk, I have a bajillion favorite characters. But I think right now it's easy to pick my top: William Wallace: "King of Scotland", bravehearted warrior, tenderhearted man, lord of Ellerslie and servant of one King. Yes, okay, he is a real guy. But I am reading the Scottish Chiefs right now (the "real" Braveheart story) and it's more fictionalized than real.
"God armeth the patriot"!
Justin Walker from Brothers and Sisters. i plan on marrying him. I do not mind joining into a family full of fictional characters.
ReplyDeleteI love Matthew McConaughey's character in Fool's Gold. Oh - and Ryan Reynold's character in The Proposal.
ReplyDeleteMr Darcy.
ReplyDelete"but i thought she hated him?"
"i guess not."
"it wouldn't be the first time we were wrong about her."
Mr. Darcy...no contest...I love that guy!
ReplyDeleteZac Efron.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I said it. Don't hate. :D hahaha
Gilbert Blythe, & Landon Carter from a Walk to Remember are also pretty superb. :)
I love Jack in While you Were Sleeping! Lucy says, "I'm in love with your son." Parents say, "We know." Lucy says, "Not that one," as she points around Peter. "That one." Aaaahhh, the look on Jack's face! Gets me every time!
ReplyDeletethe goofy, fun loving, red-headedness of Ron Weasley. He's my favorite, hands down. =)
ReplyDeleteAtticus Finch. Probably not what you're looking for, but he's wonderful.
ReplyDeleteSecond place goes to Sam from Benny and Joon. Love him!!
Gilbert Blythe alll the wayy. :) ahhh. he pursues Anne...even after years of discouragement from her, and it finally pays off. :)
ReplyDeletemy favorite GIRL from a romantic story is Elinor Dashwood. she started to fall for Edward, and rightly so, as he had clearly been leading her to believe there was something there. despite the disappointment, confusion and crazy emotions that she experienced as circumstances changed, she kept her head and guarded her heart. she stuck to facts to objective truth and dealt with herself accordingly, even when no one was there for her and even though she still had feelings for Edward. and in the end, she was rewarded with the desire of her heart. i watch the entire [emma thompson version] movie for that one scene toward the end -
ReplyDeletewhile she's sitting there BAWLING: "my heart always has been, and forever will be, yours."
as for guys - i've always always been a Knightly fan. but i'm partial to the whole marry-your-best-friend thing. :)
roger hamley in wives and daughters! definitely the best. :)
ReplyDeletecopying th Pride and Prejudice theme [just watched it last night!!] i have to go with Darcy <3<3 no words :]
ReplyDeleteMr. Clennam from Dickens' "Little Dorrit". He is so genuine and wise. I also have a thing for older guys and he is, well, older :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite fictional guy is Chandler Bing from 'Friends'. He's witty, sarcastic, cute, and sweet. ;)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite guy character would have to be Jim from the office. I love his wit and personality, and how he had this deep friendship with Pam that turned into romance. I think he is adorable!
ReplyDeleteAragorn from the Lord of the Rings movies is DEFINITELY my favorite guy character...yeah :)
ReplyDeleteOh my. That's a HARD question!! Since I don't really have a favorite, how about some that I just like a lot? :) Mr. Darcy, Mr. Knightley, Jesse Tuck (!) and Aragorn (!!). Girl characters? I like Arwen, Elizabeth Bennet, and Jane Eyre. Good role models :)
ReplyDeletesooo it will have to be my first crush, Jack Kelly from the newsies which happens to actually be christian bale. :) I heard one of the songs from the movie last week and got butterflies. I am a dork.
ReplyDeleteHands down, Gilbert Blythe. Best man ever.
ReplyDeleteSky Masterson (played by the young Marlon Brando) in the musical guys and dolls. SWOON.
ReplyDeletePrince Phillip from Sleeping Beauty :)
ReplyDeleteI think my favorite would be Arthur Clennam from Little Dorrit.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Bingley! I thought I was the only one...everyone always likes Darcy better for some reason. SO glad he made your post.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite characters are Mr. Bingley, Roger Hamley, and Mr. Knightley. Sooo good.
I love Mr. Knightly from Emma because he and was and foremost her friend and then the rest followed :)
ReplyDeleteNoah from The Notebook. SO romantic!
ReplyDeleteGilbert, duh.
ReplyDeleteI am an incredibly huge fan of Colonel Brandon from Sense & Sensibility. I love his humility, and how he does not give up hope in his pursuit of Eleanor. He is just a great man, and his steadiness is something to be certainly admired.
ReplyDeleteWell... sticking with the Jane Austen theme...
ReplyDeleteMr. Knightly from Emma. Definitely Team Knightly :)
He is so patient with Emma, always forgiving, not afraid to tell her when he think she has done something terribly wrong.
Definitely Knightly. I mean, even his name "Knight" points to his awesomeness and selflessness!!
you have no IDEA how hard this was. i love love LOVE movies, so i have a million guy characters that i really, really like. but i think my favorite is john chivery from little dorrit. he's seriously the sweetest, kindest, and cutest love-struck boy ever. and on top of that, he has a british accent and funny ears. i just love him as a character. :D
ReplyDeleteDefinitely Mr. Knightly! He's one of my favoritests! Ohh and I like Atticus from To Kill a Mockingbird :)
ReplyDeleteOh my!! This is so hard!!! I would have to say Ryan Reynolds character in The Proposal :)
ReplyDeleteMr. Knightly is the best!
ReplyDeleteThis is something I haven't really thought of before, but the first name that popped into my mind is Gilbert Blythe. The way he says "sorry" drives me crazy, but he did win Anne in the end!
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I love Captain Wentworth from Persuasion. :-)
ReplyDeleteHands down, Mr. Knightly from Emma. He loved his girl enough to speak the truth in love to her. Glad to have my own Mr. Knightly now :-)
ReplyDeleteHands down, Robin Hood! =) Especially the way he is casted in the English television series that was made a few years back. Ooooh Love.
ReplyDeleteMichael Hosea in Redeeming Love. Even though the book is based on a book of the Bible, and God's pursuit of us, there's enough detail of Michael as a person to count him a character. He is honest about his sin and obedient to God, to name a few.
ReplyDeleteJane Eyre--sensible, passionate, introspective, loyal, admirable. Have always, always loved her!
ReplyDeleteMichael Hosea from "Redeeming Love" by Francine Rivers - if there was ever a fictional man to fall completely head over heels for - it'd be him :D
ReplyDeleteSuperman. My hubs thinks he is...but I know he is, especially when he tries to save the babies on Capitol Hill.
ReplyDeleteThis is a hard one.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'd have to say Mr. Knightley. For so many reasons.
oh myy gosh. I LOVE Mr. Bingley! He's SO sweet and amazing! But I think my favorite character would be Mr. Knightley from Emma. I'm holding my future husband up to Knightley standards. =)
ReplyDeleteI love Aragorn from Lord of the Rings. He just melts my heart. Gruff and masculine yet tender and oh so handsome!
ReplyDeletemr. darcy.
ReplyDeleteThis very well might be my first and last comment, not because i don't love this and you, kristen, but because of fevers and babies and nausea and.....
ReplyDeleteBUT, i couldn't resist popping on your blog for a second, even though i've got little people calling...so this will be fast.
William Wilberforce, Amazing Grace. I love that he was passionate for a cause and had such deep love for those he gave the prime of his life for that romantic love had to wait. But it did come and he snatched it up fast, as was appropriate. I love that.
Mr. Knightly from Emma :)
ReplyDeleteMatthew McConaughey in "how to loose a guy in 10 days" =)
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorites is Guido Orefice from "Life is Beautiful". He is such a great father to his little boy even in the middle of a German workcamp...makes the whole thing a game. Plus! He and his 'wife' in the movie are married in real life, which is wonderful :) It is an Italian movie with subtitles, but it is a favorite of mine.
ReplyDeleteJoshua: Papa! Why does that sign say 'No Jews or dogs allowed'?
Guido: Some people don't like Jews and dogs. We can have a sign like that too! What is something you don't like?
Joshua: Spiders!
Guido: Great! I don't like Visigoths! So our sign will say 'No spiders or Visigoths allowed' Ever, ever, ever!
ooooh.
ReplyDeletegale or peeta from the hunger games series.
haha. yes i said both. :D
jean valjean from les mis!! he's the best!!!
ReplyDeletei really like matt from "13 going on 30". but as a sidenote, i've totally been craving "pride and prejudice" but cannot locate my copy! so sad!
ReplyDeleteI've always liked Gilbert Blythe and Mr. Darcy, but I'd have to say that my current favorite character is Jo March from Little Women, because her personality is so much like mine. :)
ReplyDeleteKirk Cameron in Fireproof!!!!
ReplyDeletemy most recent favorite guy find is Shawn Spencer from psych. that guys just cracks me up!
ReplyDeleteMichael Hosea from Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers! <3 so amazing. :) hehe
ReplyDeleteohh um probably the weasley twins from harry potter!! or really any one from HP because I pretty much desperately want to be in the wizarding world... :)
ReplyDeleteOh my.
ReplyDelete*swoons*
Mr. Knightly/Gilbert Blythe. :)
now is that too much to ask for? :D
~ Jean Marie
not sure if my comment made it...my computer did something weird yesterday. But I said Superman...because I married him. :)
ReplyDeleteMR. KNIGHTLEY. No. doubt.
ReplyDeleteP&P is my fav. as well!
ReplyDeleteThere are so many characters that I really like...but I think my absolute favorite would have to be Captain Jack Sparrow. =)
ReplyDeleteTHE VIRGINIAN!!! If I ever found him, I'd marry him an hour later. =)
ReplyDeleteThe only annoying this is that the author (Owen Wister) never gave him a name, so I'll never know. So he's always just be the Virginian.
Okay, so you absolutely can't go wrong with ANY of those Austen boys... but for something different, I've always had a crush on Dimitri from the cartoon Anastasia... So dashing! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, Gilbert Blythe. My first love. No, seriously. I think I was 7. And I knew then. :)
ReplyDeleteI am a huge fan of Bingley and Darcy in P&P, however I am going to have to go with Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables. He stole my heart when I was a little girl and I have yet to get it back. His unfailing love for Anne over the years, the sacrifices he made for her, his wit and charm, and his 'wickedness' at times! Too good to be true! :)
ReplyDeleteI love Matthew McConaughey in A Time to Kill :)
ReplyDeleteMr. Knightly, hands down. Ultimate gentleman and caring, honest friend. Goodness, I love him! :)
ReplyDeleteGilbert Blythe all the way. :)
ReplyDeleteAs cheesy as it is I love jude law in the holiday. His glasses and just so sexy
ReplyDeleteOkay, I'm total cheese. I love Grey's Anatomy. It's my escape from reality. So, in turn, I love Derek Shepherd. Total escape from reality. Here's a favorite...
ReplyDeleteMeredith: "I'm a surgeon. I do the rescuing. You are not my knight in shining whatever."
Derek: "So we're gonna fight because I pulled you out of the tub."
Meredith: "You have a place. You could sleep at it. And then you don't have to pull me out of the bathtub. You're everywhere, all the time, saying things."
Derek: "This is the happy ever after part. And in the happily ever after, the guy is there all the time, saying things and the girls love it!"
Meredith: "Go to work, I'll see you there."
Derek: "And just for the record? I am your knight in shining whatever."
P.S. I have a knight in shining whatever too. And he is a character. And I love him.
Beth, in Little Women, is my favorite girl character. Although she has her flaws, her calm, sweet spirit is so beautiful.
ReplyDelete100% Future Mrs. Knightly
ReplyDelete(I guess that makes it pretty clear on who's my favorite then, :D huh?)
I'm a huge kids' books fan, so I have to go with Despereaux (The Tale of Despereaux, by Kate DiCamillo. the book, not the movie.). Is that allowed? He is just so cute! but also I love his heart of courage and questing after nobler, better things (he reads books rather than eating them!) and his willingness to do anything for his princess. <3
ReplyDeletederek.. from greys annatomy.
ReplyDeletehe keeps his wife cool, and understands her, and doesnt try to change her, but recognizes her strengths and weaknesses and uses that to make her a better person.
reminds me of my wonderfully amazing fiance man:)
I love Meggie from the Inkheart series. First of all, her name is amazing, but she has such a wonderful personality...I'd love to meet someone like her.
ReplyDeleteEven though I'm a guy I think I can answer my favorite guy character... haha But for anyone who watches Chuck on NBC it would have to be Chuck. I love watching how much he loves and cares about Sarah, who has been a spy most of her life, so she has trouble letting Chuck into her personal life and allowing herself to fall in love with him (which I can see that being similar to girls who have been hurt really bad in the past by en ex-bf) and I love watching how patient and understanding Chuck is with her through all of that! He's kinda a super sweet, caring, tech-y nerd. Any of the girls who comment on here watch Chuck? Just curious.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love Andy Griffith...old-fashioned, I know, but so solid and sweet.
ReplyDeletecharlie brown has always been one of my favs...
ReplyDeletelaura, info@laurabarnesphoto.com
Hmmm. . . Mr. Knightly from Emma - Gerard Butler on Dear Frankie - Mr. Darcy on the new Pride and Prejudice - and the writer on the newest King Kong (I think it had something to do with his sad looking eyes:)
ReplyDeleteI would have to say Mr. Clennam from Little Dorrit, if ever there were such a (real) person.
ReplyDeleteTop 2... Col Brandon from Sense & Sensability and Mr. Knightly from Emma. excellent movies. strong characters. :)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely Mr. Knightly. Holy smokes. so perfect. I love that he corrects Emma and loves her at the same time....the best.
ReplyDeleteokay this is random...
ReplyDeleteI will agree that Gilbert Blythe is the perfect guy. However, he's a bit unrealistic in my book. :)
I like more flawed characters: Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre, Edward fron Sense and sensibility, Luther(played by Joseph Fiennes. who is oh. so. fine.)and Luc Tessyer in the film French Kiss. I <3 that you appreciate Bingly so much.I think he's rather sweet too!
I'm partial to Jane Austen and would say that Darcy and Lizzie are quite fantastic. However, Joe Fox & Kathleen Kelly from You've Got Mail are my favs.
ReplyDeleteI rather love Sir Percy Blakney from The Scarlet Pimpernel (the movie, sure, but more the book)
ReplyDeleteI'm a little torn... but I think I'll have to say Mr. Darcy played by Colin Firth, of course. But my word, Mr. Knightly too (especially in the movie played by Jeremy Northam).
ReplyDeleteI have two for today..haha I also love Pride and Preduduce.. but figured i give a different one for this! :)
ReplyDeleteChristopher Egan - Letter to Juliet
and
Hugh Dancy - Confessions of a Shopaholic
I know the contest is over, but I simply must say...
ReplyDeleteMy favorite girl character would have to be Jo March. Jo is a lot like me, I suppose, in the way of her temper, and that's why I like her. She's also witty, she writes constantly, and she has such a deep, lovely relationship with her sisters.
My favorite male characters would have to be... hm.
Samwise Gamgee, from LOTR. That isn't to say that I'm romanticly attracted to him in any way, but he's such a fantastic character! So loyal, and so brave, so trusting and caring of Frodo. I just love him :)
And on the other side of things, I love Mr. Knightly.
And Thornton from North&South.
And Ron Weasley. He's so naive, and so totally unaware that he's in love with Hermione until the very end.
