I love old things.I love things with character.A story - bet you never heard that before?
I bought this book in a tiny bookstore in Norwich, England last summer."Now We Are Six" by AA Milne is just the sweetest little book and was originally published in 1927 in London.
I often grab it before I write blog posts and look at the pictures,read the sweet "through child's eyes" poemsand mostly get inspired.(look at the cute little bear butt climbing up the stairs hahah oh man I love it.) 
It's a secret, but this will be a part of the gift basket in some way ;)
But I'll give you a hint:This is my favorite poem in the book :DAnd try not to just skip over it! It's so so so cute!You have to read it!

ReplyDeleteNot trying to be funny or anything here, but my favorite "old" thing is my grandparents! I love them so incredibly much and I can't image life without all of them. I definitely cherish the time I spend with each of them! That time is so special!
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother had her wedding dress made into handkerchiefs, and is giving one to each granddaughter for her own wedding. I was the first to receive mine, and I treasure it and display it with pride.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite "old" item is an old camera I got at a yardsale a while back. It is the "accordian" style camera and it decorates my room very nicely :)

ReplyDeleteOk, hard to pick a favorite... But my current favorite vintage item is a silver tea service set. It is my favorite thing in my room right now! The tall elegant teapot is perfection. It's not shiny new silver but old, tarnished metal. I often look at it and wonder what charming ladies used it for their afternoon tea :-)

ReplyDeleteMy favorite old thing(s) are two skirts my grandma gave me...from the 50's or 60's! They're adorably vintage and something my mom wore/might have worn. (one has a tag on it...so I'm not sure *exactly* where they came from!)
ReplyDeleteI love old hymns!! In many cases I feel like the words capture Christ's work on the cross so much better than some of the newer music I hear.

its not that old, but its the footprints of my baby brother who was a still born. his footprints are imprinted on a card and his tiny feet are not even an inch long. its something ive always cherished, and always will.
ReplyDeleteI've always loved those old-fashioned water pumps. Where you have to actually WORK to get your water and not just turn a knob. They're so fun. =)

ReplyDeleteMy grandmother's old Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald books. And Lord of The Flies and Treasure Island which both have my Uncle's names written in them from when they were in elementary school.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite old thing is a dainty green teacup that my dad bought me from the Raleigh fairgrounds flea market.. a man was selling a whole table full of them. I love the way it is shimmery green but not tacky, I love the scalloped details, and I love how the design stamped in the middle of the saucer is off center, but it is beautiful anyway, and full of character.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite old thing is my 1929 copy of "A Farewell to Arms" by Hemingway. It is my favorite book, and the binding and cover of the book is tattered and worn, and the pages brown and water-stained. I love it.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite old thing is the Canon AE-1 camera my dad bought in the late 70s before leaving for Holland with the US Air Force. He gave it to me before I became a photographer, but when he passed away 7 years ago it immediately became one of the dearest things I own.
ReplyDeleteI think my favorite "old" thing (well, my parents wouldn't say it's old) is probably my parents' wedding photo album. I can't look through the pages enough, and even though they did not have a fantastic photographer, I love looking through the photos of them when they were not much older than I am and seeing their smiles. It's just so beautiful
ReplyDeleteohhh!!!! I love the old quilt that my great aunts sewed. I use it every night to keep me all warm. =) They gave it to my Grandma, who gave it to my Mom, who gave it to me!
ReplyDeleteOhhh to pick just one. My grandma's photo albums. I love sitting and looking through them.. The old tin-type photos, great-great-great aunts in Victorian dresses... The albums are plush velvet and tin on the outside, with cardboard pages and smell like an old attic. I love it. =)

Oh my goodness, that poem is absolutely darling. I love it. My favorite "old" thing would have to be my great-grandma Dumplin's (nickname) red-beaded candle-holder. When I was really little, we would go to her apartment and I remember playing with it and my mom was like, "Hannah, no." But Gramma Dumplin said, "oh, no. She can play with it." She lived to be a month shy of 102. I do miss her. Much. ♥

Ohmygooooodness, I have SO many old things, I think it would hurt to pick a favorite! so I'll just say it is ONE out of many favorites. :)
ReplyDeleteOk. The first thing that came to mind is my Grandmother's Green Golfing gloves....she died in 2002, but when I pull them out, they smell JUST like her. they are soft and worn and crinkly because she loved to golf. :)
so they are pretty special.

Well, it's not really that old. But it's older than me! My dad worked in the China department of a store for a while when my parents were first married. The store gave away spoon rings as a promotion, my dad gave it to my mom, and this summer my mom gave it to me. It's a gorgeous ring with a fun little story behind it. I wear it all the time. It's lovely!

ReplyDeleteBut another of my favorite old things is the diamond in my engagement ring, which belonged to my fiance's Greek grandmother. It's beautiful and it's so special to think one day I might be able to pass it on to my own grandchild.
My favorite old thing is a creamer and sugar bowl my grandmother received for her 25th anniversary. She would have been 102 this year, so it's over 70 years old. It's silver plated... but I love looking at it and remembering my grandparents and their love for one another.

ReplyDeleteA ring my Mom gave me when I was 16. Her parents--my grandparents--gave it to my Mom when she turned 16! I love that my Mom used to wear it. It's my favorite old thing!
ReplyDeleteI love love love anything vintage and my favorite vintage/old things of mine are these two old Life magazines from the 1930s/1940s. I just love looking through them at the old pictures and especially the old advertisements.
ReplyDeletemy favorite old item is my Papa's high school class ring from 1950. He passed away last May and so I think of it as my little piece of him! It's gold & bronze with the high school crest on the front & his initials are etched on the inside of the band. it's my treasure!

My favorite "old" item is the 1978 edition of the Betty Crocker cookbook that my mom has (the pictures are hilariously awful, but it's such a wealth of basic kitchen and cooking info and has a handful if family favorite recipes. I used to tell my mom that I was going to swipe it from the pantry and take it with me when I married and moved out. Well she found an exact copy in mint condition at a local thrift store, hid it and saved it and gave it to me as a wedding shower gift. Now that I live in another state from my mom, it's even more special to me. It makes me feel like I have part of her in the kitchen with me every time I pull it out.

ReplyDeletemy fave "old thing" is a collection of old leather bound classic books. contains "little women", "tom sawyer" and such. they are delishiously old with yellowed pages and always smell a bit musty. they belonged to a neighbor of my grandmother's. she was like 4 feet tall and 80 when i first started going to this sweet lady's house to visit with my grandmother. she did not speak a lot of english as she had come here from poland, but i did not know till later since she always listened to the tales my 7 yr old self would tell like she understood. :)
My favorite old thing is a antique Hoosier cabinet that my mom bought and refurnished for me. It reminds me of one my grandmother has in her kitchen :-)

ReplyDeleteMy favorite old thing is not small and I can't keep it in my house... but i love the Ag History Farm Park here in MD. My family knows most of the family who grew up on the farm in the early 1900's. So much history there and now we keep farm animals there to teach the public about old time farming. It's 410 acres tucked away where most people don't know it exists. The old white farm house with the green doors and shutters with a porch swing is the perfect place to sit and watch the sun go down. I love it there :)

I inherited my G-ma's armoir (sp?). It's beautiful, has glass framed doors, and the wood is dark. I love love love it! It reminds me of her and when it used to sit in their farmhouse with antique toys inside.

My "favorite old thing" is a fiddle from the early 1800's. :) The man who owns it allowed me to play it last week, and it felt so marvelous in my hands! I want so much to buy it from him, but I can't afford it. :(

ReplyDeleteIt's so hard to choose just one...but I think my favorite "old" thing is this wall in my house...the wall itself is not old, but we call it "the ancestor wall" and it covered in photos of my ancestors. Those black and white photos where people had to stand still for long periods of time just for one picture. Mostly wedding pictures of great-gradparents and grandparents, some very very old ones of great great aunts and uncles, a few portraits, old army pictures, a few of my parents when they were very very little children...it just makes me so happy when I see it and even though I walk past it every single day, sometimes I still will spend time just sitting there examining the pictures over and over again. :)

ReplyDeletemy favorite old thing is not really that old. but it's a hoodie from college from when i randomly joined our college's rugby team. whenever i wear it i remember that one time i went waaaayyyy out on a limb and tried something new and succeeded!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite old thing is a leather briefcase that belonged to my grandpa who passed away of cancer. I remember being at my grandparents house when he would come home from work and he always carried the same worn brown briefcase. It's filled with a thousand memories.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite "old" things would probably be the two antique pieces of furniture in my house - 1. a "secretary desk" with a china cupboard on top & 2. a small table with a drawer underneath - both pieces have come from each my Mom & Dad's sides of the family, so even though I live far far away from them all - I love that I still have pieces of my family in my house :)
I love my Grandmothers living room. It has been the same for as long as I can remember. It is out dated but it is just a reminder to me of her contentment.

ReplyDeleteI love an antique quilt that was passed down from my dad's side of the family. It's made of clothes from the depression era and I've used it on 90% of all the shoots I've done. People ask "where's your quilt??!" :)

One of the most meaningful old books I own was a gift to my grandmother when she was 12 or 13 - A collection of Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales published in 1928.

Hmmm... that's hard! I like all sorts of old things... vintage stuff and cute old houses. But my favorite old thing is my Dad's signed copy of a Marguerite Henry book!! It's awesome!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite old thing is my great grandmother' rocking chair. I loved sitting in it at my grandparents when I was little. Now I own it! Overall it is still in great condition.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite old thing has to be my Grandpa's old counter from his hardware store. It represents the essence of who he was. He grew up in an abusive home and he changed that pattern. He never hit any of his children, my mom or her brothers. He worked very hard as a farmer/running a hardware store to provide for them. After he had to sell the store he put it in his basement and used it as a workbench. And after both he and my Grandma passed away I asked my family if I could have it. So it sits at my parents house, and I hope to incorporate it into my house one day (when I get one) in honor of all he gave and sacrificed for his family.

ReplyDeleteI love seeing anything handwritten by my grandfather. His written words evoke so much memory and have so much character ... the slant is that of a lefty, the long sure swipes of hand. I'm so glad he didn't use a computer to record his thoughts. His handwriting is much more personal. And makes me feel closer to him when I see it, tho' he's been gone for almost 10 years...
ReplyDeleteMy favorite old things are books and photographs. I could go on and on about why I love old books (the smell, the look, the uniqueness of each one, etc)... I love black and white pictures though, so much is left up to the imagination when you look at them.

My Grandmother had one in her house too, and seeing this type of phone, it just makes me think of all the wonderful memories with my family.

ReplyDeleteAny how.. . my favorite old item is this big steering wheel for a boat...I can't find the right name for it right now... but it was handed down to my Dad from my grandpa who was in the war. Something about it is just so awesome to me. It's been in our house for as long as I can remember.

ReplyDeleteMy dad's workshop...it has old collectible beer bottles and deer antlers and a wood stove and go kart trophies and wood from various projects. I don't think it in and of itself is very old, but it has a lot of random stuff collected over the years.
ReplyDeleteGrampie and Grammie's house. That they've lived in for years and years. Where my aunts grew up. With the big pool in back. And the horseshoe pits. The wrap-around veranda. The huge maple tree. The lilac bush. And the wonderful people inside :) Yep, I love it.

ReplyDeleteThis is gonna' be long. I'm just warning you. :) My great grandma McBrierty was one of my favorite people. When I was 17, our family traveled to Ireland and visited the old, now abandoned school she attended when she was a young girl. On the wall were rows and rows of rusty hooks, all with numbers for children to hang their coats and hats. My father absconded with one of those hooks- and it hangs in their home today. And knowing how much I loved her, I think they'll give it to me someday. ??? So I guess it's not my old thing, it's theirs. But I still love it and like to imagine her little coat there on that hook, from her days in Glennamaddy, Ireland. How's that for sappy and sentimental? :)

ReplyDeleteMy mom recently gave me some of my grandmother's old Ball mason jars. The really pretty teal colored ones with the funky lids that have a beautiful patina. I'm storing some of my craft supplies in them, so I get to use them too.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite old thing is an old cloth doll my grandmother gave me. She has a little floral bonnet and dress, and is stained with age.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is by far my Gma's old pinball machine from Germany. It's all in German, and it's one of the simplest pinball machines ever, but it's so much fun and i've been playing it ever since I was little. It's got so much character, I love it!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite old thing is the Hope Chest my grandfather made - he made one for each of his grandchildren. It is beautiful dark cedar wood (I think) and I just love it.

ReplyDeleteMy dad has a collection of really old cameras, and yo can basically line them up and see the progression of the camera....pretty cool. love them.
ReplyDeleteI visited my step-grandfather who was a stamp collector when I was 15. He showed me his postmarked letters. I was absolutely enthralled with the gorgeous penmanship on one of them. He allowed me to take it out of a book and read it. It was a letter from a girl about my age to one of her cousins. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. He saw how I lit up reading it and gave it to me. So lovely. :)
ReplyDeleteThis fall, a friend and I were poking around this dusty antique store in Philly when I found this book. It's this tiny book called "Gems" from Ella Wheeler Wilcox. It's all quotes on "Hope" which I love. It's circa 1910 which is even better!
ReplyDeleteI have a couple of books that I would include on my list, but just a couple of years ago right after getting married my husband and I managed to make it over to England so he could meet my family. My grandmother gave me one of there little "model houses" (not really sure how to describe them!) called "The Chocolate House" - I've loved it since I was little and saw it up on her shelf. I love it even more now and can't wait to tell my daughter and any future kids that it was their great-grandmothers and tell them all about her.
ReplyDeleteA picture of my only Grandmother.. She gave it to me a few month before she passed away.. It's a photo of her when she was a little girl.. It's a tintype Photo with hand Painting or coloring on it...
ReplyDeleteone of my favorite old things is the flower girl dress i wore to my aunt's wedding when i was 3 years old. it is a lovely creamy apricot color with a HUGE tulle skirt and i still have the matching ballet slippers. gahh! i love that thing. ;)
